The 2017 Pride Gala Honorees

William C. Slattery '57
Chairman, ICHS Board of Trustees
Bill graduated from Immaculate in 1957, where he played football and basketball and is a member of  the IC Hall of Fame. Educated at Notre Dame and Harvard Law School, Bill was a litigator and appellate lawyer in New Jersey for over 40 years.

Bill is also a teacher. He has taught in college and law school and, after his retirement from the law, taught several courses at Immaculate.

When the Archdiocese announced that Immaculate was closing, Bill became Chairman of the IC Board of Trustees and helped organize the “Save Immaculate” campaign. He will be retiring as Chairman of the Immaculate Board this June.

Bill’s other interests are soccer and travel. For many years, he coached boys and girls travelling soccer teams in his home town of Millburn. With his wife, Jill, Bill has attended five World Cups.  Bill and Jill have traveled to more than 70 foreign countries, and have visited Africa ten times. They are particularly in love with Uganda. Bill and Jill arrange education scholarships for graduates of the Mbunga Primary School, outside Fort Portal, in western Uganda. They are also among the sponsors of Holy Cross Lake View Senior Secondary School, one of Uganda’s top high schools, which is located on a bluff in Jinga, overlooking the White Nile leaving Lake Victoria.

Jeanne Smith,Trustee
The Emmaus Christian Community
at the Shrine of Saint Joseph

Jeanne was born in Baltimore, Maryland and began her career in the telecommunications industry there.  She moved to New Jersey in 1993 to take rotational assignment at Bellcore (formerly Bell Laboratories), and completed her 49-year career at Ericsson, Inc. as a Product Manager of network inventory management systems.

Jeanne’s introduction to IC came in 2000 when, as a member of the Emmaus Christian Community, she supported a search committee whose mission it was to select a school dedicated to the Catholic high school education of underserved young people, and partner with that school to provide financial assistance from proceeds of an annual service auction.  Immaculate was the school selected and since then, the Emmaus Christian Community has provided over $300,000 in scholarship money.  It was through this relationship that Jeanne agreed to join the Board of Trustees of IC in 2001.  Jeanne worked closely with Board colleagues in the successful effort to save Immaculate from closing almost 3 years ago.  She serves as the Board Secretary and member of the Executive Committee.

As a member of the Emmaus Christian Community, Jeanne is a Eucharistic Minister, lector, and member of the Liturgy Committee.  She also has served on the Auction committee for the past 15 years.  In addition, Jeanne works as a volunteer for the Morris County Habitat for Humanity Restore in the art department.

Jeanne has pursued her passion for travel having completed trips to Turkey, Israel, Costa Rica, Argentina and Chile, Japan, Italy, Ireland, and Spain and will soon depart for Croatia and surrounding Adriatic countries.  This summer, she plans to celebrate a “big birthday” on Ireland’s West Coast.  Her other interests include: Irish music and dancing, live theater, and reading.

Jeanne is the proud mother of Carrie Bender Hill and enjoys spending time with Carrie’s husband, Gordon, her two grandchildren, Alexander, Charlotte and grand-dog, Penny.
